99 River Street 1953 John Payne Action Crime Drama Black & White
Starring: John Payne, Evelyn Keyes, Brad Dexter
99 River Street Story Line. Having lost his heavyweight championship match, boxer Ernie Driscoll now drives a taxi for a living and earns the scorn of his nagging wife, Pauline. She who blames him for her lack of social status. Involved with jewel thief Victor Rawlins, Pauline is murdered by him when she impedes his ability to fence the jewels. Blamed for his wife’s murder, Ernie must track down Rawlins before he leaves the country.
99 River Street has some wild and unexpected plot twists. The plot is clever but never too confusing (in spite of the wonderful twists), and believable film noir ambience (sexy betraying blonde, hard-up disillusioned hero, and good girl sidekick, heist, etc). The film doesn’t emote too much sentiment with the characters but you sympathize a bit with the hero and a gangster. This movie is very fun to watch. Definitely underrated, especially compared with ANYTHING made after 1970. John Payne’s acting is unflinching, unsentimental and completely authentic.
You’ll have a hard time finding a better supporting cast than the one here. One of those rare movies where everyone nails their parts and comes through with a fresh, inspired take. A sly, sturdy, thrilling, consistently surprising picture.
