Another Man’s Poison 1951 Bette Davis Crime Drama
Stars: Bette Davis, Gary Merrill, Emlyn Williams
Another Man’s Poison Story Line. Three years after the end of the Apache wars, peacemaking chief Cochise dies. Mystery writer Janet Frobisher lives alone in a dark English country house, when she’s not philandering with her secretary’s fiancee. At an extremely awkward moment, she has an unwelcome visitor named George Bates. George claims to be the partner in crime of Janet’s estranged husband. George insinuates himself into Janet’s home and life despite her efforts to get rid of him; the tangled relationships develop into a macabre, murderous cat-and-mouse game.
Bette Davis and Gary Merrill – their first together since the Academy Award winning “All About Eve” in all the electrifying excitement of a great motion picture. This pair would go on to make one more film together – Phone Call From a Stranger.
It’s fascinating to watch the wife and husband duo in Another Man’s Poison go at each other playing anything but a loving married couple. What makes this rich, of all of the Bette Davis movies, is that the set is her own home and, what a place! Not a palace, but a very British style country home. The acting of Davis and Merrill is superb. The plot is thick and the script worthy of Davis’ fantastic articulation and conveyance of contrary attitudes.
