Blood of the Vampire 1958 Donald Wolfit Horror Sci-Fi
Stars: Donald Wolfit, Vincent Ball, Barbara Shelley
Blood of the Vampire is a 1958 British color horror film.
Story Line. In 1874, a man’s body wrapped in a shroud is shoved into a Transylvania grave. An executioner drives a stake through its heart. Immediately afterward, Carl, a severely disabled man, emerges from hiding and kills the gravedigger. Carl summons a drunken doctor to perform a heart transplant on the body. He then murders the doctor.
Six years later, Dr. John Pierre is convicted of “malpractice leading to manslaughter” after doing an emergency blood transfusion. The transfusion fails, as they all did back then, killing his patient. John is sentenced to life imprisonment in a penal colony but he’s sent to a Prison for the Criminal Insane, run by Dr. Callistratus. When John meets Callistratus, he learns that he is to help with Calistratus’s blood-typing research so transfusions can be done safely.
Solid performances bolster this horror-movie. A prologue complete with vampire-hunters and blood prepares us for the standard bloodsucker. The action inside the heavily-guarded jail is surprisingly suspenseful.
