Culloden 1964 Tony Cosgrove Historical War Drama

Stars: Tony Cosgrove, Olivier Espitalier-Noel, Don Fairservice

Culloden (TV) was a movie that was funded by the BBC with a shoe-string budget and amateur actors. Peter Watkins created a controversial and grim look at the decaying Scottish clan system and the British occupation of Scotland. During the duration of the film, Mr. Watkins takes no sides. He scathingly shows how both sides of the battlefield are morally and socially corrupt. Prince Bonnie Charles Stuart (pretender to the throne) is on the battlefield against the superior forces of the House of Hannover. The Jacobites didn’t stand a chance against the World’s greatest army. Stupidity and jealousy ruined any chance they had.

Peter Watkins showed the aftermath of the battle and the devastating effects on the surrounding communities. With a small budget, Mr. Watkins still manages to create a very important film. He spent months researching and planning this film.

Cinematographer Dick Bush said that about 85 percent of the camerawork in Culloden was hand-held. This cinema style shooting gave the  gritty reality a sense of present action. The movie looks like a documentary of an event that occurred long before the film camera was invented.

Culloden is one of the earliest and best examples of a docudrama. It’s realism causes the viewer to feel true empathy for participants.  Especially the Scottish Jacobites. This is a great movie that should be on every history buff and cinema enthusiast’s list.
