The Devil’s Disciple 1959 Comedy History
Stars: Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier
Devil’s Disciple takes place in a small New England town during the American War of Independence. Dick Dudgeon is a revolutionary American-Puritan who is mistaken for a local minister. When the British arrest him, Dick finds he is not capable of accusing another human to suffer and continues to masquerade as the reverend.
The minister’s wife, moved by Dick’s actions, mistakenly interprets them as an expression of love. In spite of his protestations, she continues to feel a romantic attraction to Dick.
Dick is brought before a British commander. His display of a willingness to die for his principles saves him from ministerial pursuits to become a revolutionary leader.
Laurence Olivier is a British general surrounded by mediocrity and outnumbered by rebel forces. The rebels won’t give him a fair fight. Burt Lancaster is a pacifist minister trying to protect innocent parishioners. The majority of the parishioners haven’t taken a side in the Revolutionary War. Kirk Douglas is a bright-eyed ne’er-do-well, interested only in himself.
Put three great actors like this together and you’re bound to get great results!
