Last Sunset 1961 Rock Hudson Kirk Douglas Western
Stars: Rock Hudson, Kirk Douglas, Dorothy Malone
Last Sunset Story Line. Brendan O’Malley arrives at the Mexican home of old flame Belle Breckenridge to find her married to a drunkard getting ready for a cattle drive to Texas. Hot on O’Malley’s heels is lawman Dana Stribling who has a personal reason for getting him back into his jurisdiction. Both men join Breckenridge and his wife on the drive. As they near Texas tensions mount, not least because Stribling is starting to court Belle and O’Malley is increasingly drawn by her daughter Missy.
On the eve of the showdown between the two men, Belle discloses the secret that Missy is the daughter of O’Malley and their incestuous love cannot continue. He is stunned but refuses to believe her. He spends the day with Missy and promises to leave with her. At the gunfight, O’Malley faces the sheriff with an unloaded gun, effectively committing suicide.
Tagline: When giants clash, a woman trembles!
The Last Sunset is a breathtakingly photographed adventure with three-dimensional characters, good writing by Dalton Trumbo and solid acting. The drama gets a little thick at times, but flickers of humor intercede whenever things get too mawkish.
