One of the last bills signed by President Lincoln authorizes pushing the Union Pacific Railroad across the wilderness to California. But financial opportunist Asa Barrows hopes to profit from obstructing it. Chief troubleshooter Jeff Butler has his hands full fighting Barrows’ agent, gambler Sid Campeau; Campeau’s partner Dick Allen is Jeff’s war buddy and rival suitor for engineer’s daughter Molly Monahan. Who will survive the effort to push the railroad through at any cost?

Trooper Hook (1957)
Stars: Joel McCrea, Barbara Stanwyck, Earl Holliman
McCrea plays a Cavalry officer sent to rescue Stanwyck, who had been captured by Indians years earlier. Upon reaching the Indian village, McCrea discovers that Stanwyck, forced into marrying the chief, has a young son (Terry Lawrence) whom she refuses to desert. After intensive persuasion, Stanwyck permits McCrea to bring herself and her son back to her white husband, John Dehner–who refuses to have anything to do with the child. But after Dehner’s death, both Stanwyck and her son find happiness with McCrea.

The Great Man’s Lady (1942)

In Hoyt City, a statue of founder Ethan Hoyt is dedicated, and 100 year old Hannah Sempler Hoyt (who lives in the last residence among skyscrapers) is at last persuaded to tell her story to a ‘girl biographer’. Flashback: in 1848, teenage Hannah meets and flirts with pioneer Ethan; on a sudden impulse, they elope. We follow their struggle to found a city in the wilderness, hampered by the Gold Rush, star-crossed love, peril, and heartbreak. The star “ages” 80 years.

In a fantastically art-deco hospital, young Dr. Kildare treats and falls for impoverished Janet Healy, widow of a bank robber, who’s been in prison and can’t find her baby. Later she helps Kildare sew up gangster Hanlon in a tavern back room. Kildare pursues Janet and enlists Hanlon to help her; the gangster’s solution, not surprisingly, is violent.

McCrea plays a shantytown boy who marries a land girl (Stanwyck). The patriarch of McCrea’s family, played by Walter Brennan, is desperate for a grandchild. Unfortunately, Stanwyck and McCrea can’t seem to get together…
