After shooting a hired gun of Honest John Barrett, Marshal Silver is run out of town. The reappearance of Barrett interrupts an otherwise placid life. Barrett is an old enemy and the son of a hired gun from years ago named Anderson.

Cass Silver is the marshal of a small Kansas town. He expects trouble with the arrival of the first Texas trail herds on a newly completed railroad. The town’s new saloon owner, Honest John Barrett, is anticipating an increase in business but he and Silver have negative history between them. Barrett wants to be rid of the marshal. To make matters worse, the marshal’s deputy is the son of a gunfighter Cass shot years before. Thad wants to avenge this death because he has always believed his father was unarmed when Silver shot him. Eventually, Thad realizes the truth and helps the marshal restore law and order to the town.

The Proud Ones has an extremely fine script by Edmund H. North, veteran screenwriter. The plot vastly improves on the novel on which it was ostensibly based. Robert D. Webb’s direction is taut, featuring dense images, helping his actors to achieve top-notch performances. Every element of this production works, from the art direction by Lyle Wheeler to the memorable theme song, the sets, and the costumes.

This is a great movie from a time when men were too honest to be bought off and too brave to be scared off.
