For a fitness workout, one should start out with a warm-up with low-intensity continuous activity.It is important to get your body moving, heart beating, and blood flowing so that you can more easily shift into the more vigorous part of your workout.

As a general rule, walking and, in some cases, slow jogging are good choices to start out your workout. After 3 to 5 minutes of such exercise it is common practice to do some stretching and toning exercises. You want to first get your blood flowing. This gets the body temperature up, the heart beating more rapidly, and increases your breathing. Then you want to include some stretching and some low-intensity muscular exercises.

The Ten Commandments of StretchingStretching for Flexibility

  1. Follow the stretching exercises specific to your activities and needs.
  2. Stretch regularly, at least three times a week.
  3. Warm up before stretching with light aerobic moves.
  4. Stretch only to the point of tension in the belly of the muscle, not pain in the joint.
  5. Hold each stretch for 15 to 60 seconds.
  6. Do each stretch two to four times.
  7. Stay relaxed.
  8. Breath throughout the stretch.
  9. Progress in a slow, controlled manner.
  10. Do not bounce.
