The Sun Shines Bright 1953 Charles Winninger Comedy Drama B&W
Stars: Charles Winninger, Arleen Whelan, John Russell
The Sun Shines Bright Story Line. John Ford weaves three “Judge Priest” stories together to form a good-natured exploration of honor and small-town politics in the South around the turn of the century. Judge William Priest is involved in revealing the real identity of Lucy Lake, reliving his Civil War memories. He hopes to prevent the lynching of a youth and contests the elections with Yankee Horace K. Maydew.
The Sun Shines Bright takes place in a “polis“, a tiny Kentucky town of Fairfield, during an election. The whole story is a meditation on leadership, compassion and tradition. Charles Winninger is superb. The prostitutes funeral, with its closing scene in the church, where the Priest quotes the Bible, is simply grand. The parade at the end is very touching – in fact, the ending itself is very touching.
