This 4 Disc Set includes completely restored versions of Smash Up, Story of a Woman (1947), The Lost Moment (1947), Canyon Passage (1946) and Tap Roots(1948). A time frame that spans three of the best years of the Susan Hayward acting career. Smash Up, Story of a Woman and The Lost Moment are Film-Noir’s, both done in Black and White, while Canyon Passage and Tap Roots are historical westerns done in Technicolor. All four films were produced by Walter Wanger.

Nightclub singer Angie Evans (Susan Hayward) puts aside her successful career to marry struggling songwriter Ken Conway (Lee Bowman). Inspired by the birth of their daughter, Ken plays one of his ballads on a morning radio show, and his career explodes. As a stay-at-home wife and mother, Angie finds her shaky self-confidence slipping. Convinced Ken is having an affair with his secretary (Marsha Hunt), Angie begins drinking. When Ken files for divorce, Angie responds by kidnapping their daughter.

Publisher Lewis Venable (Robert Cummings) is desperate to acquire love letters between noted 19th century poet Jeffrey Ashton and Juliana Bordereau (Agnes Moorehead). Learning that Juliana is still alive, Lewis arranges an introduction. Assuming the identity of a rich author, Lewis meets the now-blind Juliana, who allows him to rent rooms in her home. Lewis’ search for the letters takes a turn when Juliana’s great-niece, Tina (Susan Hayward), is revealed as a schizophrenic obsessed with Ashton.

In 1856, backwoods businessman Logan Stuart escorts Lucy Overmire, his friend’s fiancee, back home to remote Jacksonville, Oregon; in the course of the hard journey, Lucy is attracted to Logan, whose heart seems to belong to another. Once arrived in Jacksonville, a welter of subplots involve villains, fair ladies, romantic triangles, gambling fever, murder, a cabin-raising, and vigilantism…culminating with an Indian uprising that threatens all the settlers. Morna Dabney is engaged to soldier Clay MacIvor in the days before the War Between the States. Morna’s grandfather Big Sam Dabney founded their Mississippi plantation near Levington, which thrives in the Deep South, but he remains loyal to the Union, as does his son Hoab, Morna’s father. As Mississippi secedes, Hoab plans to withdraw the area around his plantation and remain neutral, and he gains support from local newspaperman Keith Alexander. Keith falls in love with Morna, whose fiance Clay has joined the Confederate Army. Clay plans to punish the would-be neutral citizens of Levington by raiding the area, but Morna, with the help of her grandfather’s Choctaw friend Tishomingo, attempts to thwart the attack. Morna sacrifices greatly to protect her home and the man she really loves.
