Tarantula 1955 John Agar Mara Corday Horror Sci-Fi

Stars: John Agar, Mara Corday, Leo G. Carroll

Tarantula Story Line. Professor Gerald Deemer is experimenting in the Arizona desert with growth hormones. The Professor’s goals is to find a way to increase the world’s food supply. Tragically, his partner in the project is found dead in the desert, suffering from a disease that normally takes years to advance. In his case, the disease afflicted him in only a few days.

Matt Hastings, the local doctor, is puzzled by the strange case and tries to figure out what is happening. When cattle remains are found in the countryside,  the evidence points to a giant tarantula as the culprit.

It is soon discovered that a spider escaped from an isolated Arizona desert laboratory. The lab was experimenting in giant-ism. The escaped spider grows to a tremendous size wreaking havoc on local inhabitants.

Produced by William Alland (who also produced Creature From the Black Lagoon and It Came From Outer Space, and directed by Jack Arnold, Tarantula has an intelligent script.  The acting is good all the way around.

Tarantula holds up today because the special effects are still quite impressive. There is nothing that today’s audience would find hokey . It’s fun spotting a young Clint Eastwood. Great Sci-Fi and great entertainment. A film viewing must!
