The Bravados 1958 Gregory Peck Western Drama
Stars: Gregory Peck, Joan Collins, Stephen Boyd
The Bravados casts Peck as a desperate man eager to take revenge on four outlaws who killed and raped his wife. He arrives in town where the men he thinks are the criminals to find all four about to be hanged. The prisoners escape and the villagers enlist Douglas to capture them. Douglas, along with a posse, sets out in pursuit of the outlaws and soon faces the vicious bandits.
Gregory Peck steals the show as the merciless avenger but soon learns he is no better than those he hunts. Peck may be doing public service homicides, but there’s a higher law he must answer to for the preservation of his soul.
Special mention should go to Andrew Duggan as the priest. Duggan does a good job giving just the right spiritual counsel to a troubled soul.
Themes like rape were not exactly subject matter for westerns before the 1950’s. The Bravados succeeds both as Saturday matinee and a serious adult drama. It shouldn’t be missed. The ending brings quite a twist to the tale.
