Thunder Road 1958 Robert Mitchum Crime Drama Black & White
Stars: Robert Mitchum, Gene Barry, Jacques Aubuchon
A veteran comes home from the Korean War to the mountains and takes over the family moon-shining business. He has to battle big-city gangsters who are trying to take over the business, plus the police are trying to put him in prison.
Thunder Road has plenty of involving drama centered around a guy who acts as a transporter for moonshiners. Handsome Robert Mitchum keeps it all together in between the action sequences.
A major hit upon release, Thunder Road is widely considered to have started the “bootleggers in fast cars” sub-genre. The film remained a drive-in favorite in the American South for decades.
Trivia: Film debut of Christopher Mitchum. He was 13 years old and was paid $10.00. He was at the country store dance, the kid in the back playing the washboard. Mitchum’s younger brother in the film is played by his then 17 year old son, Jim.
Mitchum’s excellent performance and an honest, understated script give us a snapshot of an American way of life that few outside of the rural South could comprehend. The culture of individualism and freedom from Federal oppression is sadly much less today. This film is a huge cult film in the South because it reminds us that our ancestors were willing to take on the tyrant face to face.
