The Turning Point 1952 William Holden Crime Drama Film-Noir
Stars: William Holden, Edmond O’Brien, Alexis Smith
The Turning Point Story Line. Special prosecutor John Conroy, hoping to combat organized crime, appoints his father Matt (a cop) as the chief investigator. Matt is reluctant and John doesn’t understand why. Cynical reporter Jerry McKibbon thinks he knows the reason. The reporter has seen Matt with mob lieutenant Harrigan. Jerry’s friendship with John is tested by the question of what to do about Matt, and by his attraction to John’s girlfriend. Meanwhile, the threatened racketeers adopt increasingly violent means of defense.
Edmond O’Brien plays an idealistic lawyer heading a disturbing investigation that leads to his own family. William Holden plays the investigative reporter and childhood pal of O’Brien’s. He is a born cynic on screen if there ever was one. He gets to the center of the corruption plague while attracting the attentions of O’Brien’s girlfriend and secretary.
The Turning Point amounts to a surprisingly good blend of a complexly constructed narrative. Personal, romantic, and political elements combine in an effort to tap into the anti-racketeering hearings of the time.
